When you see an interior designer on the news, what do you think?
You may have seen a couple of their creations in the last couple of years.
They have been gaining traction, but there is one that is still on the market that is just as intriguing as it is old.
It’s called the “Masculine Interior Design” and it is an aesthetic and design movement that has been taking off in the U.S. for years.
The trend has come to be called “modern masculine,” but the word “masculinity” has also come to denote something that is masculine.
The “Mas-C” is a term that is used in the design world to denote masculine, yet it can also refer to an individual’s appearance or style.
In a recent interview with ABC News, the designer who was one of the inspirations for the project, Jason Seaworth, explained that his design team started the concept after reading articles about the “Modern Man.”
The concept is not a new one, but the idea was brought to Seawards mind while designing a new home for his father.
He was fascinated by the idea of modern men with a masculine aesthetic and his father’s experience in life.
“I think that it’s a great idea to look at a person and look at their lifestyle and how they’re trying to live and how much they want to be in a certain way,” he said.
The father had an extremely busy life, he said, and his son, who was only 4 years old at the time, had a lot of questions and needs to be met.
“We just wanted to do something that was a little more modern for him and a little bit more modern than his usual home,” he explained.
Seawors design process for the “mas-C,” a home for a man, was very similar to the style he had used in his previous home.
“There was one particular design element that was very popular and that was the wall space, which is where he could really get in and have a bit more space and really get a sense of what he’s looking for,” he recalled.
He went to the home he wanted to create and created a few wall pieces with different designs that he thought were going to be interesting to his son.
“It was a lot more of a minimalist aesthetic and a very clean, simple style,” he told ABC News.
It is an idea that has captured the imaginations of people across the globe.
But what exactly is “modern masculinity”?
While many designers and writers are now saying that the term is “inherently male,” it is actually not.
“Modern masculinity is a broad umbrella term for a variety of behaviors and attitudes that are prevalent in modern American society,” explains Mark Cancio, author of the book Modern Man and his co-author, David Duchovny.
Cancios book, Modern Man: A Cultural History of the American Male, offers a more specific definition of the term.
Modern masculinity is not the result of one specific trait.
Rather, it is the result, in part, of the changing cultural landscape and the way men interact with the media, Cancos book states.
“The masculine aesthetic has been growing over the last 30 years, so that’s where modern masculinity comes from,” he explains.
“When I look at men in their 40s and 50s and 60s, I look for a sense that they are taking the lead in the world, they are trying to be better than the rest of the world and they’re looking to be respected and respected and recognized.”
The phrase “masculus” was used by Plato to describe the male psyche and the idea that man should be strong, independent and assertive.
“In a lot [of] ways, modern masculinity is the embodiment of that, and so I think that’s why it is so successful, because the idea is that it is a masculine, masculine identity,” he adds.
Modern masculine is not just an idea, however.
The concept of “modern man” is being used as a metaphor for masculinity.
In addition to men, “modern men” can include women, people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, people in between, and those with intellectual disabilities.
The term “modern masculinism” is used to describe a group of men who embrace a more masculine, but still masculine, style of living.
And the word itself is used a lot in fashion.
In recent years, men have been seen wearing a variety, from suits and ties to more conservative outfits, and some are even using their masculinity to become a fashion icon.
“They are dressing more like a gentleman, and I think a lot is about that, because we want to have a very strong masculine identity that we are proud of and we are going to wear it,” Seaward said.
